I’m currently working on a picture book called The Jelly That Wouldn’t Wobble with Maverick Publishing. It’s a really great topic and I am loving drawing grumpy jellies. The subject matter is so nice in fact, it absolutely takes away any pain of working on the weekend!

Hurray for rare gems like this! and shame they need it all tomorrow- i am quite sad to see him go.

Rhino? What Rhino? Up for award

Had some amazing news earlier this year. A picture book written by Caryl Hart and illustrated by me, has been shortlisted for the Sheffield Children’s Book Award.

The ceremony takes place next Tues 29th at Sheffield City Hall. So i will be galloping up to Sheffield next week to see if the Rhino wins, and also to do a little double act with Caryl Hart at a local school event. Should be fun.

Im really thrilled to see our book on the shortlist for this award, and am much looking forward to meeting the kiddies and the other shortlisters on tuesday.

I am looking for a flexible, creative Illustration or Design undergraduate/graduate to assist me 2 days a week beginning Jan/Feb 2012.

If you would like to gain vital experience regarding working freelance and also work on some great creative children’s book projects. I would love to hear from you!

- 2 days per week. (flexible)

- Freelance position

- hrly rate of £10 p/hr after trial period of 5 x days. (unpaid)

- Lunch and travel costs covered during trial period

- Starting end of Jan/February 2012

- Typical hours: 9.30 – 6pm (flexible)

- Based in Wapping, London at Happiness at Work Studios.

your skills:

Good working knowledge of Photoshop essential.

ability to work to tight deadlines.

Good eye for colour.

What you’ll be doing:

Practical help with artworks: scanning, applying colour, creating textures etc

Admin tasks

Helping install and dismantle exhibitions.

The job is very varied, it would involve scanning artwork, applying colour and some light admin tasks. Initiative, and ability to work without supervision essential.

I can offer lunch, and will cover your travel expenses (within London) during the trail period (5 x days). Opportunity to work in a great, friendly studio enviroment, with excellent coffee often accompanied by cake.

Blue Suede Shoes goes central!

Our Gumbo Illustration show ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ opened last night at the Nancy Victor Gallery.

Great space. Do go and see it, it runs until the 21st October. Open Monday to Saturday 10-6pm.

Raising funds to support The Batwa Project

This summer has been great, though very busy with all manner of work. There’s been a great variety of things in the pot.

One of the biggest challenges and learning curves this summer was running an Art Auction in aid of a small project we’re supoorting out in Burundi, Central Africa. I will be going out with a small team from Brockley to see the work in mid October. As they say in the film UP: “Adventure is out there!”

Anyway, the auction was held yesterday, about five minutes from my studio in Wapping at Hermitage Moorings. We were selling framed illustration, signed books, limited edition prints and original art. All in all we raised 453.57 to support the Batwa Project. Not so bad for a wet Sunday afternoon I suppose.

In short the Batwa Project is an initiative that runs schemes to provide for an indigenous tribe called the Batwa People. These people really are at the bottom of the pile. They own no land and live a pretty much hand to mouth existence. The Batwa Project aims to help in supplying housing, food, education, healthcare for this forgotten people.

This is a little snippet of a sample for a picture book I’m working on. It’s about a Queen and a grumpy jelly. Loving colour as always, truly one of life’s little joys! (seconded only by grumpy jellies..)

Happiness…. studio space available

I work from Happiness At Work Studios in Wapping, London. It’s a great place to work, and really helps me to escape the inevitable ‘cabin fever’ i get when working from home for long periods of time. It’s very quiet, reasonably priced, we are above a Cafe AND in Zone 2!

HAW have 4 spare desks available at the moment. Would suit Designers, Illustrators, Writers, Photographers and the like! Come have a look, we have especially good coffee and Jaffa cakes too.
